Lake St. Clair Seasonal Patterns
Baits…Is There Really A Difference?
by Wayne Carpenter
If you’ve attended my seminars, you’ve probably heard me say, “everything works” or “confidence will catch more fish than anything.” All of that is true. Much of the success we have as anglers revolves around what works best for us. So is there really a difference in the baits we choose?
My answer is, “yes!” Over the years, I’ve worked hundreds of baits hard while examining the results. My conclusions for smallmouth:
- Small flake is dominant. Larger flake tubes catch fish all day long but I’ve seen small flake baits of all types out-produce their close cousins.
- Laminated baits dominate in the river and lake systems. Laminates have a definite advantage over baits that are not
- 5” baits are higher percentage on Lake St. Clair. I’ll throw a 5” tube first on Lake St. Clair because the results are there.
Why this is important to all anglers is that by putting the best technology in their hands, they can now make bait selection on what works best, not just on what “might” work today. Like getting a bigger faster boat, a smoother reel or the perfect rod, throwing the highest percentage baits available takes guesswork out of the equation. Now, the skill of the angler can make all of the difference.
